Description

Crafts For Art

Before becoming the capital fifteenth of noble families and bankers, Florence was the city guilds, crafts and arts major and minor.
It 'just one of the protagonists of the minor arts, the masters of stone and timber, smelters, blacksmiths, potters, goldsmiths, artisans in short, that we must look for technical knowledge that, as an invisible scaffolding, allowed Renaissance works to achieve greatness for which today are celebrated throughout the world. In Florence, but also in small towns neighbors, are the artisans who invented new manufacturing techniques, complex and spectacular.
There's this art and wisdom in the works of Benvenuto Cellini in terracotta of Della Robbia.
In 1401 he was banished to Florence the competition for the creation of the north door of the Baptistery. In this competition, which resulted in a confrontation between Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti, seven were admitted between metal craftsmen and goldsmiths.
The innovative techniques with which the bronze was worked to achieve the famous doors of the Baptistery in Florence are still in use today in some small Florentine workshops.
Equally ancient and almost alchemical techniques are the "Florentine mosaic" and processing of precious stones, the Florentine paper, and carving of wood inlays and that of glass whose wonders have nothing to envy to the 'blown' Murano.
